Build the Rhythm

Reconstruct a heard rhythm using note and rest values.

Listen, compare, then practise

Listen, count the full phrase, then add note and rest blocks in order. Each block uses time, and a rest creates no attack. Fill the phrase before checking your answer.

A · Worked example

Half note → Half note

11234>22

Listen for attacks and silence, then assemble note and rest durations in order. Your sequence must fill the stated bar.

The phrase fills 1 bar. Read the blocks from left to right: Half note · Half note. A rest uses time without a sounding note.

B · Compare the difference

Quarter note → Quarter rest → Quarter note → Quarter note

11234>1R 111

Compare a rest with a held note: both can create space, but a rest contains silence whereas the notation records continued note duration separately.

The phrase fills 1 bar. Read the blocks from left to right: Quarter note · Quarter rest · Quarter note · Quarter note. A rest uses time without a sounding note.

Blocks show durations in quarter-note units. R marks a rest; > marks an accented attack. Numbers below each bar are quarter-note positions, which differ from the main beat in 6/8.

Check the idea: The sum of written note and rest values must equal the full bar.

1 · Guided practice

Build one beat at a time with the duration tokens. Check the remaining bar length before submitting; undo the last token if needed.

2 · Independent practice

Write the complete rhythm from the audio, including each rest. Use replay to check positions rather than copying a displayed answer strip.

3 · New-question check

Reconstruct a newly generated pattern after correction. Its first submitted token sequence is recorded separately from retries.

Each session starts with two guided questions, then your chosen practice set, followed by two new questions at a different tempo. First answers, same-question retries, and the final check have separate results.

If this feels difficult

  • The sequence is too long or too short. Count the value of every duration before rebuilding. Quarter Notes
  • Silence is replaced by a note. Locate the silent beat before choosing a token. Rests

The teacher pack includes 10 fixed questions, replay controls, a student sheet, and a separate answer key. The printed key and downloaded JSON use the same questions.
