Practice that stays with you.
Free music training, with a clear next step.
How to practice
Choose a trainer, select a level and enable sound with a tap. Listen, answer, and compare the examples. Finish ten questions to save a report. At least eight answered questions count as completed practice; skipped questions are shown separately. Accuracy uses answered questions only. A completed session with at least 80% correct suggests the next path step.
Sound and timing
All examples are original synthetic triangle-wave sounds using twelve-tone equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz. No recordings, third-party samples or microphone access are used. Sound starts only after you choose to enable it.
Rhythm uses one-to-one matching within 60–150 ms, depending on tempo. Extra taps reduce accuracy. Overall offset and timing variation are reported separately. Bluetooth, speakers and browser input latency affect timing. Optional five-beat calibration estimates device delay together with your tapping offset. The score describes this exercise on this device.
Reading and accessibility
Treble and bass staff trainers work without sound. Use Tab to reach controls and Enter to answer. When the tapping area is focused, Space records a tap. Hold down does not add repeated taps. Rhythm strips use outlined blocks for rests and filled blocks for sounds; their lengths show quarter-note units. Reading questions name the clef without revealing the answer.
Your data
Practice inputs, answers, results and detailed practice logs stay in your browser. Public testing collects anonymous page views, clicks and effective active time in aggregate to improve Earstep. Shared practice statistics contain fixed content and session identifiers, not your answers, audio, searches or imported files. No account is required. Use Disable anonymous statistics in the footer to opt out on this browser; you can enable statistics again there. Export JSON to back up progress, CSV for a summary, or use Print / Save as PDF for a report. Import merges a valid backup with current sessions. Clearing local data removes results, events and calibration; clearing the offline cache keeps progress.
Offline practice
After the first online load, the app stores its pages and examples for offline use. Wait for Ready for offline practice in the footer before disconnecting. Use the same browser and local address. Private browsing or storage restrictions may prevent caching. Sound needs a modern browser; written-note practice is available without it.
Sources and ownership
Training briefs, patterns, notation and generated sounds are original project content. General music rules can be explored through musictheory.net lessons and teoria tutorials. Browser sound capabilities are documented by MDN Web Audio. No commercial exercise bank has been copied.
Earstep offers practice feedback, not formal certification. Long-term learning outcomes and performance on untested devices have not been established.
