Rest and Re-enter

Count through whole silent bars and return at the right moment.

Listen, compare, then practise

Hear the opening bar, keep counting through the silent bars, then echo the returning phrase. During your turn, tap the opening and ending notes while counting the rests silently.

A · Worked example

Tap at quarter-note positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12.

11234>111121234R 431234>1111

Count through every silent bar and keep track of the bar number. The return is timed from the original pulse, even when no target note sounds.

The opening uses 4 quarter-note beats. Count 1 complete silent bar before returning on beat 1. 3 bars fill 12 quarter-note beats.

B · Compare the difference

Tap at quarter-note positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 14, 15, 16.

11234>111121234R 431234R 441234>1111

Compare where the silent span begins and ends. The rest is measured time; the next sounded entry does not reset the count.

The opening uses 4 quarter-note beats. Count 2 complete silent bars before returning on beat 1. 4 bars fill 16 quarter-note beats.

Blocks show durations in quarter-note units. R marks a rest; > marks an accented attack. Numbers below each bar are quarter-note positions, which differ from the main beat in 6/8.

Check the idea: A silent bar contains the same elapsed duration as a sounded bar at the same tempo.

1 · Guided practice

Speak “bar 1, 2, 3, 4” at each bar’s first beat. Keep the silent bars quiet on the tap control and prepare the return.

2 · Independent practice

Perform the full multi-bar pattern, including the re-entry. Inspect missed or extra attacks around the end of the rest.

3 · New-question check

Count a fresh rest span from the new count-in and enter at its own marked return point.

Each session starts with two guided questions, then your chosen practice set, followed by two new questions at a different tempo. First answers, same-question retries, and the final check have separate results.

  • A silent bar is omitted. Keep one full bar with a single silent beat first. Rests
  • The return drifts although bars are counted. Continue the pulse through a missing reference click. Keep the Silent Pulse
